The Birthplace of Boccaccio

Perched atop a hill with a dominant position overlooking the Elsa Valley, Certaldo is a medieval walled town of great beauty, with breathtaking views over the scenic Tuscan countryside. The dominant colour of the city is the red of the bricks of the various historical buildings.

The upper town center, known as Certaldo Alto, can be reach in 10 minutes walking or through a cable car from the down square.

The main palaces and buildings face Via Boccacio, where you'll also find the House of Giovanni Boccaccio, great Italian writer and humanist of the 14th century, author of the famous novel Decameron.

The Palazzo Pretorio or town hall has been restored to its former splendour; it’s characterized by a beautiful facade with coats of arms, and hosts many notable frescoes.

In Certaldo many festivals and events take place each year, like the Boccaccesca, a festival dedicated to wine, and the more famous Mercantia, a great festival of street artists and performers coming from every part of the world: acrobats, actors, clowns, musicians, and many others. Extraordinary shows and a lot of craftsmen’s stalls will crowd the narrow streets of the historical center.

The town is the perfect base to explore the main sights of Tuscany, being located very near San Gimignano, Florence and Siena.
