The Square of the Tournaments

In the far 1469, Piazza Santa Croce in Florence was the splendid setting to dispute a tournament on occasion of the wedding of the famous Lorenzo il Magnifico dè Medici to the roman lady Clarice Orsini. Of course Lorenzo was the winner! In addition to festivals and concerts, the square is also used to play the famous Calcio Storico as it was in the 16th century, a challenging and harsh Florentine football tournament between the city four quarters.

A Monument to Tuscan Artists

The magnificent Franciscan church of Santa Croce, right facing the square, is extremely beautiful both for its incredible architecture and its amazing frescoes’ cycle, amongst which some by Giotto. In the first cloister of the church, Brunelleschi's Cappella dei Pazzi is a masterpice of Renaissance architecture not to be missed!

Founded by the richest families of Florence, the church hosts the monumental tombs to many illustrious Tuscan artists and scientists, such as Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Galileo Galilei, Leon Battista Alberti. There is also a memorial to Dante Alighieri, and one to the physicist Enrico Fermi. In addition to the great church and the museum, another attraction in this area is the museum of Casa Buonarroti, homage to Michelangelo, displaying early works of the artist.
