The Quarter of Skillful Craftsmen
Oltrarno can be found in that part of Florence’s center that is on the other side of the Arno river, beyond the Ponte Vecchio; it is less touristic, yet incredibly fascinating with its beautiful handcraft workshops of goldsmiths, antiques, sculptors, woodworkers, all following an ancient tradition. Here, you can take a pleasant walk through the Boboli Gardens or visit the wonderful Palazzo Pitti, home to the Palatine Gallery, displaying a beautiful collection of paintings.
All the area is literally full of churches, amongst which the beautiful Church of Santo Spirito with its wonderful cloister is worth visiting. It was realized on the project of Brunelleschi, and hosts amazing frescoes by Filippino Lippi and a wooden Crucifix attributed to Michelangelo. Oltrarno is the most typical Florentine area of Florence’s historical center. Small and characteristic restaurants serving delicious Florentine specialties are only waiting for you!
